My first class was Archaeology, which sounds interesting. Our teacher seems kind of picky though, she read the entire syllabus to us, and went over all of the topics we are going to cover. According to her guidelines, if you have any grammar, material, or formatting errors you get a C...that is going to be hard since we have to write a 10 to 12 page research paper! And she started to ask us questions about the topics... that is why I want to take this class, to learn about archaeology! It does seem like an interesting topic, so I will give it some time and see if I like the class or not.
Afterwards, Claire, some friends and I went to Tienda Verde, which is a little store not too far from SLU Madrid. It looks quite sketchy from the outside (and the inside), but I think it is run by a Chinese couple. They make sandwiches and have all kinds of drinks, chips, and candy, and random other stuff. I got a nice size Serrano ham (the most popular ham in Madrid, it is cured and can be really expensive) and cheese sandwich, on really good bread...that is definitely a trend here. So, I got the sandwich, Spanish Cheetos, and Spanish Oreos for only 2.80 euros, which is a pretty good deal, about $3.65 (with average exchange rate of 1.30 euros for $1). We went back and ate our lunches out in the cold, it was really windy today.
My next class was History 112, which is history from 1500 to present, and is focused mainly on Western civilizations. The teacher was really funny, and British....definitely not going to be a boring history class, yay! I have a hard time in history classes that cover so much history like this one, so hopefully he will make it better. This class doesn't seem too bad, we basically have the whole book on SLUGlobal/Blackboard whatever you prefer, so no book, yay!
I then sat in one of the reading rooms and tried to get some History reading done. It was about the Renaissance, so it wasn't too bad, but I still had a hard time getting through it! It didn't help that people kept slamming the door outside either. I can't wait until that 3rd building gets approved.
Tonight for dinner we had pasta with a lot of cheese and bacon (maybe), bread, and salad. It was really good! Except I don't really know if Spanish people actually eat like this or if our Senora is making this for us because we will eat it...hmm..
Things I have learned in Spain:
- Random person on the metro #3: woman singing with a karaoke machine on a rolling cart
- Random person on the metro #4: man wearing a St. Louis Cardinals hat and Oakland Raiders leather jacket
- It is way too cold to be wearing a skirt
- It gets colder during the middle of the day....scientifically that doesn't make any sense, unless everyday at the same time there is a cold front coming through. I need to research that
- It is not acceptable to put your feet on tables or chairs or have no shoes on
- People in Spain don't carry around water bottles...do they even drink water?
- I think every Spanish person must be wearing/have something with them that is made of leather
¡Adios!
